• Thomas's Experience as a Father accessing healthcare on behalf of their children - Part 3

Thomas shares his experiences of accessing children's centres with his son, and observing that in most instances he was the only dad present. Whilst this extends beyond the health and care settings, more into the community, I highlights his understanding and awareness as a father.

I've been very fortunate in my role, both in my previous job and my current job that I do uh condensed hours, so I work 4 long days and have Fridays off to be able to provide childcare for my two sons, um, alongside my wife, which means we have an extended weekend, but an opportunity to spend quality family time together, um. Between my two jobs, I was made redundant and was unemployed for 3 or 4 months. Um, but I had the opportunity to go even before my second son was born, I had the opportunity to go to children's centres most Fridays with my eldest, um, and I noticed that I was always in most situations, the only dad there. Um, now, for me, that's not too much of an issue

I'm happy to talk. To mums or anyone, but mums, when I'm there about breastfeeding and, you know, all the mum stuff which is absolutely fine, um, but I recognise that it's a space where, There aren't many dads that engage and if they do, you can tell that they're quite intimidated and uncomfortable with perhaps conversing around women's health, um. But also, you know, engaging in the activities, particularly around singing and dancing and doing all the kids' stuff

Um, as I say, it's not an issue for me. I've never really found it much of a problem, but I, I do recognise that the space perhaps isn't um as encouraging as it could be for for dads. Uh, so yeah
