For the past two and a half years, Hexplorers has been inspiring children and families in Hexthorpe, Doncaster, through a wide range of artistic workshops. The name Hexplorers combines Hexthorpe and Explorers, reflecting the project’s vision of giving children the chance to explore different artistic languages and to discover or develop their talents.

The project began with creative activities such as literary games, poetry, puppetry, crafts, mask-making, visual arts, and drumming. In its early days, drumming workshops used simple plastic popcorn baskets – a reminder that creativity can flourish even with the most modest resources.

With the support of grants, Hexplorers has grown into a structured programme offering guitar lessons with real instruments. Guitars have been gifted to participants, ensuring that all children can take part fully, regardless of financial background. The project is founded on the belief that art not only nurtures creativity and sensitivity but also teaches discipline, commitment, teamwork, and a strong sense of belonging.

Hexthorpe, a neighbourhood in Doncaster where many families live on low incomes and where inactivity and unemployment are high, previously lacked spaces offering artistic workshops for children. The Arts & Culture Community Centre established Hexplorers to fill this gap, providing a safe and creative space where children can learn, create, and connect with others in their community.

Two groups are currently active: the “minis” (aged 7–9) and the “juniors” (aged 10–13). Participants come from diverse backgrounds – Asia, Africa, and Europe – reflecting the richness of Hexthorpe’s multicultural community.

Another distinctive feature of the project is its use of local talent. The tutors leading the workshops are residents of Hexthorpe, and their involvement strengthens both the children’s experiences and their own development as artists, giving them recognition and empowerment as cultural educators.

Over time, Hexplorers has moved beyond the classroom to the stage. The children have already performed at HexFest, church celebrations, and other community events. These presentations have become proud moments for families and neighbours, showcasing not just musical progress but also confidence, teamwork, and joy.

Hexplorers is more than a music project. It is a cultural initiative that inspires young people, strengthens community ties, and celebrates diversity. By combining literature, puppetry, art, and especially music, it creates opportunities for children in Doncaster to explore, discover their talents, and grow into active, creative citizens.
