As part of a collaborative research project between people from racialised communities, London School of Economics and Equality Trust, Jasmine shares her insights into what is wealth, what helps and hinders people from racialised communities to build wealth and what could make a difference. The research was funded by the British Academy Innovation Fellowship Scheme (Fellowship number IF2324/24008). You can find the summary briefing from this project and any further information from www.equalitytrust.org.uk
This person discusses wealth in terms of being able to financially sustain yourself and future generations and describes it as spending power on leisure, recreation and giving to others. This person suggests that a good education and employment routes are how people can build wealth but describes structural barriers to accessing career progression for women and particularly women of colour. She describes a lack of visibility of women like herself in positions of power and high pay leadership positions. This storyteller suggests that the government should do more to enable people to have access to well paid jobs, cheaper travel, things that would increase income.
