As part of a collaborative research project between people from racialised communities, London School of Economics and Equality Trust, Nyama shares her insights into what is wealth, what helps and hinders people from racialised communities to build wealth and what could make a difference. The research was funded by the British Academy Innovation Fellowship Scheme (Fellowship number IF2324/24008). You can find the summary briefing from this project and any further information from www.equalitytrust.org.uk
Nyama identifies wealth as money and considers herself not wealthy because she doesn’t have investments, savings, and lives on a rented property. She discusses high Inflation and limited salary/income. Nyama notices that in her area poverty level is very high and people are dependent on food banks. This has an led to an increase in mental health issues. Nyama comments that in her community income is shared with extended family here in the UK and overseas.
