Jacky works for 'Access Social Care'- an organisation which provides free legal advice to people with social care needs, helping to achieve a better quality of life. In her work role, Jacky supports parents, carers and young people who are planning for adulthood to understand their options and to uphold their rights. Jacky is also parent and carer to a young man who is autistic, and has a learning disability. Jacky's own lived experience enables her to support other young people and those who care for them. In this video, Jacky shares the experiences of many of the parents and carers she works alongside.

My projecting is, is, I've got two hats in Access Social as well, so, um, half of my time is just on a Gloucestershire project. So we, I'm funded halftime and a caseworker funded halftime. Um, And we'd be, we're just into our second sort of 3 year block of funding from Palmwood. And it's been really amazing in that it's quite they're big into sort of learning, not setting strict outcomes

So we've been able to learn and evolve, if you like. So, um, I've been trying to find ways of reaching groups who might not. Even though they've got the right to social care, um, or might be less likely to pick up a phone line or

You know, argue their case sort of thing. You know, there's a bit of early help, there's a couple of clubs that they can go to. But, um, to give you a short break, but that's it, um, you don't get seen by a social worker

Um, and then those that do struggle and need social work support, you're made to feel that it's because. There's the safeguarding risk or that you're not, you're the one that's not coping or. All those sorts of things

So your relationship with social care is quite distrustful and damaged before you even step into adult services. So many parents don't want anything to do with social care. Cause they're frightened of them

Yeah. Um, others have just been told over and over again. You know, well you, you basically you chose to have children, get on with it
