We invite everyone who supports Ashton Allotment Action to come along
to our next action day on Saturday 17th September from 10.00 am
onwards.
We need your support on this day as we have the BBC 'The Postcode
Lottery' coming to film and we need to show that there is public
support for the right to allotments in Ashton-under-lyne
This is your opportunity to come along and show the BBC TV viewers how
you feel about Tameside Council's failure to meet its statutory
obligations under the 1908 Allotment Act to provide allotments in Ashton
Today there are now over 370 people on the waiting list for allotments
in Ashton and demand for allotments is growing, yet we still have no
Public allotment sites in Ashton.
The Ashton Moss site is situated between Moss Lane and the M60
Motorway, here over 7 years ago people on the Council's allotment
waiting list were promised allotment plots and they are still waiting,
At the time of the development of the M60 Motorway in 1996, the former
Ashton Moss allotment sites were taken out of use and alternative
sites were promised by Tameside Council to replace those that had been
lost.
This land was developed over 7 years ago as an allotment site by
Caseys on behalf of Stayley Developments Ltd, as they were
commissioned by their clients Tameside Council.
The people on the allotment waiting list have now been told by
Tameside Council that the site is not due to be handed over in the
near future and that Tameside Council cannot even comment on this site
because it is private land.
?However in correspondence, Stayley Developments Ltd have clearly stated
Tameside MBC have an interest in this land we have over a
considerable time asked them to clarify their position relating to the
allotments. We have once again approached them to progress these
negotiations as quickly as possible and we are hopeful that a positive
conclusion will be reached in the short term.?
We have been to Tameside Council District Assembly meetings and asked
these questions:
When are Tameside Council going to let these allotments on Ashton Moss?
Their response ?we do not know?;
What has Tameside Council been doing about this matter for the past 7 years?
Their response ?negotiations with Cordingleys are ongoing?;
Who is responsible for the mismanagement and negligence which has
allowed this prime allotment site to become overgrown and neglected.
Please come along and show that you do not accept that Tameside
Council can ignore their stautory duties to provide allotment sites
and treat the people of Ashton as second class citizens.
Please come along and support the 17th SeptemberAction Day, come when
you want and stay as long as you want, please bring your own hand
tools, food and drink
The allotment site is located between the M60 and Moss Lane, which is
a single lane track running from a junction of Lord Sheldon Way
(A6140), left from Droylsden/Manchester, right from Ashton-under-lyne,
this is close to the M60 junction with the A635 Manchester Road
If you are coming by car, there is limited parking near the it could
be advisable to park at the leisure park and walk over the roundabout
and motorway bridge, where you will find a footpath leading to the
allotments, here is a map showing the allotments. I have attached a
map which may be useful, please feel free to ring me if you have any
questions
