Salford seems to have a bad name with some people as a dirty old town. My experience is somewhat  different.

I was born in Chirton, near Whitley Bay, Northumberland. When I was about 5 years old, I was having difficulty breathing, so my mother took me to see the doctor. The doctor eventually said that the sea air was too strong for me and that we should move away. My parents had family in Salford, so off to sample it's good fresh air we went.

I was now six years old, still having breathing problems so off, once again, to the doctor. This time the Salford doctor sent me to Hope Hospital for a nasal wash. Four days in hospital then for a simple procedure, not as now two hours in outpatients if you are lucky. There were four other boys in the ward, all of whom were having their tonsils out.At meal times, they were given ice cream to eat because of their sore throats, when I asked could I have ice cream I was told "you can eat ordinary food so no ice cream." Life is never fair is it? On my way home from my hospital stay I was in a hurry to get there.  I started to run, then suddenly realised I could breath normally and enjoy the 'fresh' air. Oh what a lovely experience and in Salford too!

I have lived in Salford for sixty three now and have enjoyed every one of them.Dirty Old Town,Ewan Mc Call eat your heart out.
